The Stevens Model 301...
The Stevens Model 301 was purchased as part of a collection that we have of H & R shotguns. Because they are a single shot that another reason too have it. My husband is a former police officer and has been hunting all his life in New Mexico.

After two and a half...
After two and a half years of satisfied ownership I'd like to write a review, even though these Stevens 301 in 12 gauge are not currently available. I have really enjoyed the Stevens 301 and use it as a tractor/truck/survivalist gun. I got a stick-on side saddle from eBay that holds 6 rounds. It is made from polymer and holds the shells tightly and does not stretch out like the nylon fabric shell holders. I carry 2 target shooting rounds, 2 turkey/duck loads, and two buckshot loads on the side of the stock. I always keep a buckshot shell in the chamber. This way I am prepared for anything. I experimented with everything from homemade black powder loads, shooting .69 caliber "pumpkin balls" , making buck and ball loads, casting slugs and shooting them, and using a 357 Mag insert. The only problem I've ever had was when the black powder fouling built up and the shells wouldn't eject. Once I cleaned it really well, I haven't had that problem, and I don't experiment with the black powder anymore. I decided that my quest for a homemade single projectile, slug or ball, being accurate was limiting the gun. I could not hit a paper plate dependably at 50 yards. The Stevens 301 is a scatter gun and that is what it does best. I put a full choke on it and plan to leave it like that. With the full coke, all 9 buckshot pellets hit inside a paper plate at 40 yards! I use the target rounds for rabbits and squirrels, and have made what felt like some very long shots at 50 or even 60 yards and not missed once. I did add a cheek riser to help get my impact correct. I don't look down the barrel and line the bead up with the rear notches like a rifle, I just put the bead where I want it and my eye is the rear sight, if that makes sense. Works for me. I also camo spray painted my Stevens 301. It came out very well in my opinion. I love that the gun breaks down and I have a duffel bag I can easily transport it in. All in all I've been very satisfied. A pump shotgun would not fit in the scabbard on my tractor easily, and selecting the ideal cartridge for the job would be harder in a pump. I like that I can just grab the gun and be ready for self-defense, deer, coyote, duck, turkey, goose, rabbit, squirrel or quail. Thanks Buds!

Q: Can the butt stock of this shotgun be shortened or lengthened ?
Author: Eric E.
(2) ANSWERS
A: Eric, the interior of the stock is hollow so shortening it may pose difficulty as the molded screw points would likely be cut off. As for making it longer, I usually just find a decent slip on recoil pad to add a bit of length, spacers may also work if the proper size is available.
Author: Trevor D.
A: Eric, I would check with Savage/Stevens for specific stock configuration/ material at US: (413) 568-7001 or (800) 370-0708
