Ruger Mark IV Hunter .22 LR Satin Stainless Pistol

A: It is apparent that sturm Ruger never really got along with CA. All of these types of Ruger .22's dropped off the doj roster a few years back. CA was requiring the any pistol that was up for a renewal, to remain on the roster had to include microstamping. Ruger declined to incur the additional hefty costs of resubmitting those pistols for Testing and adhering to the microstamping. So as a result, the pistols were dropped from the list. I recall actually hearing a couple years ago the Ruger had no intentions of making any CA compliant pistols, kind of fed up with their regulations. But since, they have abided slightly, as some of their newer pistols are on there. However, this pistol has not been added back.

A: If the serial number begins with 500 or higher and the safety is marked with a white dot "S" it should be either the newer model (500) Series or the updated trigger version (White dot "S") This is what Ruger says anyway. I am waiting for the 500 series Competition version to buy.

A: I have the competition Mark IV, and have shot the Hunter. For all intents and purposes, both guns shoot identically. The sight radius is great on the hunter because of the length of the barrel, and the sights are good, even through the sights on the target/competition are different, the aiming is essentially the same. There is one thing to be aware of on the Mark IV, the trigger is very heavy out of the box, and that impacts accuracy more than anything else. It feels like it is about 5lbs, where my other target 22s, like Smith 41, Smith Victory, Beretta Neo, all have 2-3lb pulls, and shoot better for me than my Competition IV. So plan to have some trigger work done on the Mark IV to get it where it needs to be. The accuracy of the pistol is excellent otherwise, and I figure I could get dime sized groups at 10 yards with the sights, like my other .22s,, but the trigger often pushes my groups into 2", especially if I am fatigued. A: Brayden - One can buy replacement barrels, but the cost is going to be $300+. There are various services online that offer the threading services. Threading this barrel might well involve relocating your front sight back just a bit, or it might not. I would suggest you consult a local gunsmith or machine shop and check their prices first, as the shipping costs will add to the cost of sending it to an online service. The last barrel I had threaded cost me $80, locally, so that's a substantial savings over buying a new barrel.
