First, hats off to...
First, hats off to Buds. I've done business with them over a period of years and their prices are always among the most competitive with fast and reliable shipping. Radical Firearms Socom. This is my second AR-15 with the first being the PSA Blem. Both of them very very popular budget rifles with good reputations. This particular rifle arrived in a generic white box with basic foam padding for protection during shipping. The package includes a lock, manual and metal 30-round magazine. It appeared brand new, clean, no blemishes, nicks or scratches. Initial function check before any cleaning or lubing ensured all basic functions were fine. The action was very gritty, very stiff. The trigger is mil spec. It functions just fine. The adjustable stock adjusted and did not feel loose or wobbly. The foregrip was "sharper" than the well rounded PSA foregrip. However, it did come with gray colored, m-lok, rubber grips for the hands. The stock is a B5 style with a built-in QD socket and a decent recoil pad. Charging handle is basic, as are all components other than the B5 furniture. I disassembled the rifle, cleaned and lubricated the components, installed the m-lok rubber hand grips, an m-lok QD socket on the barrel end of the rail, and replaced the stock carbine buffer with an H2 buffer. Yes...before I fired the weapon. After cleaning and lubricating the components and working the action a few dozen times, the action was much easier, smoother and quieter. With the m-lok grips, the feel of the rifle was more secure and less "sharp". On this one I installed a 1-8 LPVO and went to the range after bore sighting. The metal magazine has TIGHT clearances and I ended up forgoing it for a MagPul that was easier to load and with seemingly a tad more clearance at the top. Within 5 rounds I was sighted at 50, and three more rounds brought me home, consistently, at 100yds. This was with CBC 55g FMJ and later with PMC Bronze 55g, IMI Green Tip 55g and Fiocchi Range Dynamics 62g. I consider myself sighted in when I am consistently hitting a 4" plate from 100yds with any of my factory ammo. The one thing that I did notice was that I was under-gassed according to my ejection pattern which may be due to the H2 buffer and stock spring. My brass was all throwing to the 430-5 oclock position. I have replaced the H2 buffer with the stock carbine buffer to see if that helps. However, apart from the ejection angle, there were zero failures to feed, eject, no jams, lock ups, battery issues yada yada yada. The Radical Socom performed well for the 100rds I put through it, seems to be consistent with both 55 and 62g factory ammo (it has a 1:7 twist) and was simply solid at the range. Pros: Price, fit and finish seems good, B5 furniture, consistent performance/accuracy in the first hundred rounds with various factory ammos, no malfunctions. Cons: Hand rail without the m-lok grips is a little uncomfortable compared to the PSA. Didn't care for the metal magazine. That's it. I got nothing more to gripe about. Good rifle so far at a good price with plenty of potential for customization.
