Hello all, I just...
Hello all, I just received my Ruger guide gun in .300 rcm with the mt.green laminate stock. It is heavy for a compact model. The action is a little rough for this "gun's" intended purpose"guide gun" I would hate to be trying to work this action with something coming to kill you!!! That being said, if you work this action with purpose it dose function correctly. I think the function may ease with use or a trip to the Smith may be called for. I love the look of the rifle"I am a sucker for the green though". I have heard of this rifle arriving in rough shape this was not the case with mine😎!!

Picked mine up...
Picked mine up yesterday. Haven't shot it yet, but it's not my first 77 and I expect it will shoot somewhere between fair and good, like the rest. First, the stock. I didn't think I would be crazy for it and I'm not, but I like it. The green and brown and black and gray laminate looks good. The checkering is deep and sharp and the finish is smooth and nearly flawless. Wood to metal fit is just so-so and the barrel rubs on one side. Finish on the metal is a bead blasted gray and looks nice. It goes well with the stock. Over all the rifle is "pretty." The recent Ruger 77's I've seen have had extremely tight claw extractors. This makes the bolt hard to open and close. This is a quality issue as these should turn freely on the bolt body. I've handled a lot of Mauser and Springfield bolts and I know how they should fit. This is a problem that takes a lot of time to correct and repairing this flaw could cause bolt or extractor damage if you don't know what you are doing. The bottom of the right bolt raceway on mine was sharp enough to shave hair. Safety and bolt release both had very sharp points on them. Compared to the 77 R made in the late 70s these new Rugers seem only semi-finished. For a rifle that has an MSRP of over a thousand dollars I expect better. Still, I didn't give nearly that for mine and I like it a lot. I'm an amateur gunsmith that hopefully knows his limitations and have already corrected the metal problems. For someone who doesn't want to or can't work on their own, a trip back to Ruger might be called for.
