Love, love, love this shotgun. Surprisingly accurate and fun to shoot. I have a 12ga shotgun, including an 18.5" with the same grip, but this 20ga is much more fun to shoot and won't kill your back and shoulder after laying down some serious rounds. Buy slugs in bulk and go to town!

I bought this crazy...
I bought this crazy new fangled firearm for myself to have ready quickly out here in a very rural setting. I already own a 12 gauge Mossberg "Persuader" full size pump action shotgun, which I am very impressed with its quality, style, slick action, and 7 + 1 capacity. But, at 83 in age, the 12 gauge is a wee bit too punchy, besides being quite long for having to move around with it inside the house. This Shockwave is barely 26 inches in length, five + 1, and recoil with high brass 20 gauge is reasonable, besides being effective for defense. Low brass, bird shot is great for practice, but I'm never going to try hunting game with it! It IS designed for, and very adequate for THE intended defense purpose. The unique fore-grip retainer strap is an excellent addition especially if under a stressful scenario. ANY bad boy would instantly recognize the ratcheting sound of the pump action, and change his mind about being in his elderly victim's home! Q: I'm having trouble deciding between the 12GA and 20GA versions of the Mossberg 590 Shockwave. I am buying one primarily for a home defense weapon and a gun range weapon. Would a 20GA be sufficient for home defense? Any reason to get the 12GA over the 20GA?

A: larger availability of different types of shotgun loads in the 12 ga. I would check the local ranges where you are and see if it is allowed to be shot on the range. Where I live most ranges ban the short barrel pistol grip shotguns

A: If you're buying for self-defense, you might as well get the more powerful 12 ga unless you're recoil sensitive. Because of the larger diameter, the 12 ga shell holds more shot than the 20 ga if using buck shot, or larger slug if using those.

A: If you want a quality side saddle made of steel that will last a lifetime, check out Mesa Tactical, they make the best. As for the front bead sight, you have many options, Google exactly what you want and check out your options. There are some available that all you have to do is slip it over your current bead sight with a little epoxy. You can get anything from a slightly larger bead all the way to a night sight replacement. Good luck in your search.
